A new FAU survey finds that 36% of Floridians have moved or are considering moving due to hazards such as hurricanes, flooding and extreme heat. Nearly a quarter of North Floridians say weather hazards have influenced their past moves and about 20% of respondents in the rest of the Peninsula south say they are considering a move at least in part due to weather hazards. More than 60% are concerned about stronger storms and flooding, and nearly half are concerned about homeowner’s insurance costs.
With growing urbanization worldwide, concerns for its effects on wildlife is also growing. Many species, however, are able to adapt to urban life by taking advantage of urban resources, like supplemental feeding. While supplemental feeding is considered to contribute to reproductive success of urban wildlife, the exact effects on mammalian reproduction remains unclear. Now, researchers provide evidence that supplemental feeding can boost reproductive conditions of squirrels in urban areas.
Changing the amount of sweetness in a person’s diet has no impact on their liking for sweet foods or their health, the results of a new trial suggest.
Researchers at the University of Oulu have identified significant differences in mortality among widows and widowers from cohabiting versus married relationships, depending on the deceased partner’s cause of death. Accidental death increases the surviving partner’s mortality risk more than death from illness. Mortality rises particularly sharply among those who had been living in cohabitation.
Arts-based approaches effectively capture the complex and layered experiences of displaced young people, a new study from the University of Eastern Finland shows. Conducted among Afghan refugee youth living in Iran, the study participants were invited to draw and write about their life. Using an arts-based approach and social representations theory, the study explored how young people make sense of life between two cultures and how they envision their future.
