Unraveling the evolutionary trajectory of TRPM2 ion channels
Science China PressPeer-Reviewed Publication
This study demonstrated that the activation mode of an ancient type of ion channel,TRPM2, by ADPR and Ca2+ evolved through at least three identifiable stages from a simple activation mode to an intermediate one and then to a complicated and coordinated one. A novel gating mode in fish TRPM2 proteins was identified, representing an evolutionary intermediate. Important permissive changes at a specific position were also identified, which occurred during the transition from water to land in vertebrates, indicating the origin of the NUDT9-H domain's dependence for channel activation by ADPR. The researchers proposed that the environmental oxygen level may facilitate the TRPM2 channels to acquire a more precisely regulated, coordinated activation mechanism. This study sheds light on how species adapt to their environments at the protein level.

Modulating polymerization of aromatic polyimides on carbon nanotubes for high-performance organic potassium-ion batteries
Science China PressPeer-Reviewed Publication
In a paper published in Science Bulletin, PDPI/CNTs nanocomplexes were designed by in situ polymerization of pyromellitic dianhydride and 2,6-diaminoanthraquinone on carbon nanotubes. The optimized PDPI/CNTs showed excellent performance in both K-ion half cells and full cells. Two sets of universal experiments, TOF-SIMS and TEM analysis showed that CNTs-guided polymerization degree modulation is the key to efficiently utilize the active sites for potassium storage.

Memristive effect in supercapacitors
Science China PressPeer-Reviewed Publication
In a recent article published in the National Science Review, based in Beijing, Professor Xingbin Yan and his research team from Sun Yat-sen University introduce a novel concept called the supercapacitor-memristor (CAPistor). This new device leverages non-linear ion transport within the pores of a metal-organic framework, specifically the zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-7).
