The International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) and STEMCELL Technologies today announced the launch of Applying the ISSCR Standards for Research, a free, on-demand course designed to help scientists integrate the ISSCR Standards for Human Stem Cell Use in Research into their work. The course provides practical guidance to strengthen rigor, reproducibility, and responsible use of human stem cells across the research pipeline.

Dr. Timothy Phillips, a professor in the VMBS’ Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, has spent his career uncovering the manifold uses for clay in human, animal and environmental health. His research has led to the discovery of a wide range of clay-based therapies used in preventive medicine and for mitigating exposure to toxins and pollutants during disasters, outbreaks and emergencies. While some therapies are applied to the skin to prevent the absorption of toxic chemicals, others are meant to be eaten, where they prevent absorption of chemicals internally.

Researchers are now investigating a Viking Age grave with preserved skeletal remains and jewellery. The grave was found at Val in Bjugn, in Trøndelag County. A discovery by a metal detectorist alerted researchers to the find.

Pancreatic islet transplantation can help, but donor organs are rare and require chronic immunosuppression. As part of the European Vanguard project, led by the University of Geneva (UNIGE), scientists have developed an artificial pancreas capable, in experimental settings, of restoring glucose levels. Recognised by the European Commission’s Innovation Radar, this work represents a major step forward in the fight against this disease, which affects more than 9 million people worldwide and could double by 2040.
