Utah's locally sourced dust pollution carries far more hazardous elements than natural dust blown in from Great Basin, potentially threatening Salt Lake City’ water supplies, according to new research led by University of Utah.

A UF/IFAS study reveals that termites are not simply spreading through natural processes, suggesting humans may be helping them "conquer the world" by unknowingly transporting them aboard private boats.

University of Illinois researchers surveyed residential rain barrels around Champaign County to determine how often mosquitoes took up residence in rain barrels and what preventative measures would most effectively keep mosquitoes out. Taking these preventative measures will reduce potential health risks and ensure that rain barrels remain a safe, effective, and environmentally sustainable tool for managing stormwater runoff.

The study, published today in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology: Advances, recruited 100 metabolically healthy individuals following a long-term low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet who developed elevated levels of LDL cholesterol–dubbed Lean Mass Hyper-Responders (LMHRs). The researchers found that traditional cholesterol markers (ApoB and LDL-C) were not associated with baseline heart disease or progression in this population, calling for investments in further research and personalized treatment strategies.
