Similar to carbon, silicon forms two dimensional networks that are only one atomic layer thick. Like graphene the two-dimensional layers exhibit exceptional optoelectronic properties. Embedded in a polymer they are stable and can be used for applications in the up and coming field of nanoelectronics.
