Why Acidosis Can Cause Brain Damage in Newborns with Jaundice (1 of 2)

image: Mouse brain is stained blue by Evans blue, a dye that cannot permeate into brain tissue when the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is intact. This image shows that hypoxia-induced acidosis can lead to a compromised BBB and penetration of dye into brain tissue. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Feb. 12, 2020, issue of Science Translational Medicine, published by AAAS. The paper, by K. Lai at Sixth People's Hospital of Shanghai in Shanghai, China; and colleagues was titled, "Bilirubin enhances the activity of ASIC channels to exacerbate neurotoxicity in neonatal hyperbilirubinemia in mice." view more
