image: This shows the massive calving front of the southernmost of four tributaries of Upernavik Icestream, Northwest Greenland. In the center a rising plume of sediment-laden subglacial meltwater discharge protrudes into the water surface. Subglacial meltwater discharge is a major component of meltwater runoff and therefore the surface mass balance.
