This shows the massive calving front of the southernmost of four tributaries of Upernavik Icestream, Northwest Greenland. In the center a rising plume of sediment-laden subglacial meltwater discharge protrudes into the water surface. Subglacial meltwater discharge is a major component of meltwater runoff and therefore the surface mass balance. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the August 03, 2012, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by K.H. Kjær at Natural History Museum, University of Copenhagen in Copenhagen, Denmark, and colleagues was titled, “Aerial Photographs Reveal Late–20th-Century Dynamic Ice Loss in Northwestern Greenland.”
