Recent advances in hyaluronan research

Hyaluronan (HA) is a naturally occurring polysaccharide first discovered in 1934 by Meyer and Palmer. Since then, it has been extensively studied for its diverse biological functions. As one of the main components of the extracellular matrix, HA plays an important role in regulating various cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation, inflammation, and immunity through its interactions with HA receptors.

In recent years, HA has garnered significant attention in the medical and cosmetic fields. It has been shown to play a crucial role in maintaining skin health, contributing to hydration, elasticity and barrier function. In orthopedics, HA has shown promise in treating osteoarthritis by enhancing the viscoelasticity of synovial fluid and reducing joint wear. Moreover, studies on oral HA have indicated its potential in improving skin conditions and joint health, although the mechanism underlying its effects, especially after oral administration, remains a subject of ongoing research.

In a study published in the Journal of Dermatologic Science and Cosmetic Technology, a group of researchers from China and the United States comprehensively reviewed the roles and mechanisms of HA in skin health maintenance, orthopedic disease treatment, gastrointestinal tract protection and liver function regulation, providing insights into its broad therapeutic potential.

“From its fundamental properties to its diverse functions in the skin, joints, gastrointestinal tract and liver, understanding HA better allows us to explore novel ways to address common health concerns,” remarks corresponding author Peixue Ling, a professor at the National Glycoengineering Research Center of Shandong University. “The challenge now lies in deciphering the intricacies of its absorption and action mechanisms, especially after oral administration, which will bring new possibilities for its therapeutic applications.”
