ADHD: Hebrew University's Cog-Fun Lab leads the way with breakthrough treatment for awareness month

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem

In honor of ADHD Awareness Month this October, the Cog-Fun Lab at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, under the leadership of Professor Adina Maeir, is spotlighting its pioneering Cognitive-Functional (Cog-Fun) intervention. This innovative approach has been transforming the lives of individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) of all ages, offering a fresh and impactful method of treatment.

Developed by Professor Maeir and her team at Hebrew University’s School of Occupational Therapy, Cog-Fun is an evidence-based intervention designed to help individuals with ADHD manage the challenges of daily life by improving executive functioning and essential life skills. "Our goal is to provide people with ADHD practical tools to manage their symptoms, enhance their ability to navigate everyday tasks, and significantly improve their overall quality of life," explains Professor Maeir.

Key features of the Cog-Fun approach include:

  • Tailored interventions for children, adolescents, adults, and their families
  • A focus on improving executive functions and daily life management
  • An emphasis on self-awareness and the development of personalized strategies

Recent studies highlight significant improvements in both functioning and quality of life for adults who have undergone Cog-Fun treatment. Professor Maeir stresses the need for an approach that addresses ADHD across all age groups: "ADHD is often misunderstood as a childhood disorder, but around 4.4% of adults live with it, which can severely impact their work, relationships, and overall well-being," she explains. "Our approach recognizes ADHD as a lifelong condition and equips individuals with skills for long-term self-management."

What sets Cog-Fun apart from other ADHD treatments is its comprehensive, holistic approach. Unlike many treatments that focus solely on symptom control, Cog-Fun addresses the multifaceted cognitive and psycho-social challenges of ADHD across the lifespan. Developed through a rigorous evidence-based framework, it enhances executive functioning and life skills while improving the quality of life for individuals and their families. The program is designed to adapt to different life stages, offering customized interventions for children, teens, and adults alike.

Moreover, the Cog-Fun approach empowers individuals to develop self-awareness and self compassion  as well as  personalized strategies, that are not overly effortful, enabling them to manage their symptoms effectively in real-world settings and over time. The Lab is also committed to ongoing research and cultural adaptations of their treatment for diverse populations, ensuring the intervention remains relevant and accessible.

In conjunction with ADHD Awareness Month, the Cog-Fun Lab aims to increase public understanding of ADHD and the critical role that science-backed, holistic interventions like Cog-Fun play in improving the lives of those affected by this chronic condition.
