(IMAGE) Osaka University Caption <b>Schematic of conjunctival epithelial cell generation.</b> hiPSCs were differentiated to form SEAMs. Ocular surface epithelial stem/progenitor cells, which express p63 and PAX6, are present in zone 3 of the SEAM. In differentiation culture, conjunctival epithelial lineage cells were predominantly seen in the EGF-treated SEAM derivatives, while KGF promotes the development of corneal epithelial lineage cells. Conversely, KGF is necessary for the maturation of the hiPSC/SEAM-derived conjunctival epithelium and the formation of mucin-producing goblet cells.
