Above: Comparison of pro-inflammatory macrophage (white arrows) and anti-inflammatory macrophages (white arrowheads) in cross-sections of muscle from icing and non-icing groups on Days 3 and 5. On Day 3, macrophage accumulation in the iced muscles was low, however more were accumulated by Day 5. Below: Average number of pro-inflammatory macrophages in each field. In the icing group, pro-inflammatory macrophages didn't accumulate in the damaged muscle in the early stages. Their delayed accumulation was observed on Days 5 and 7.
