Nox3 expression is not found in the cochleae of juvenile mice (top section of the diagram). The number of Nox3-expressing cells (outer hair cells and supporting cells) increase at the basal turn of the cochlea as a result of aging, exposure to noise, and ototoxic drugs (such as the anticancer agent cisplatin) (middle section). Superoxide causes outer hair cell apoptosis (loss/death), which results in hearing loss (bottom section). This is either caused by superoxide originating from Nox3 expression in the hair cells themselves, or by superoxide originating from surrounding supporting cells expressing Nox3. Note: this is a diagram of Figure 2.
