HS. a New Bacterial Strain (IMAGE) University of Utah Caption This microscopic image shows newly discovered bacterial strain HS, with stains used to color cell walls red and the DNA or genetic material blue. Discovery of the new bacterium helped University of Utah researchers figure out how bacteria come to live in mutually beneficial symbiotic relationships inside about 10 percent of all insects. The new bacterium was isolated from an infected wound on an Indiana man who impaled his hand on a tree branch.
