Caption
Near-infrared image of Venus with the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, in the Canary Islands. The sequence demonstrates the process of subtracting the brightness of the dayside of Venus in order to analyze the details of the nightside. The dark areas on the right of the first and third images are clouds, while the light areas are areas of lower opacity through which thermal radiation (infrared) from the planet's surface appears. Image taken on July 11, 2012.
