Modern Hurricane Belt Graphic (IMAGE) Durham University Caption Recent hurricane data (A.D. 1842–2009) are from National Hurricane Center (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2011). Hurricane categories are based on maximum sustained wind and depicted using same color scheme as National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (2011). Notice the apparent lack of hurricanes within 10o of the Equator. This belt is also known as the doldrums. Credit J.
