FIG 3 FIB Distortion (IMAGE) University of Oxford Caption FIB distortion. The gold crystals studied in this research. The left crystal was not machined using FIB, the central crystal was exposed to a low FIB dose, while the right crystal was machined extensively. The crystal surface is colored according to the distortion of the crystal lattice caused by FIB milling. Yellow indicates no distortion while red shows highly distorted regions. Clearly even small amounts of FIB damage have a dramatic effect, and extensive FIB milling causes complex distortion patterns.
