卵子や精子となる細胞の発達課程で、新たに発見されたMEIOSIN遺伝子は、体細胞分裂から減数分裂への切り替えを引き起こします。さらに精子と卵子を形成する際にはたらく数百種類の遺伝子を一斉にオンにすることがわかりました。
