Schematic of Meiosis Being Activated by the Meiosin Gene during Somatic Cell Division (Mitosis) (IMAGE)
Caption
Mitosis is the main cell reproduction process in a living organism's tissues, and meiosis is the process that induces sex cell formation in the gonads of organisms that reproduce sexually. The Meiosin gene, at the crossroads between the mitotic and meiotic cycles, gives the signal that initiates meiosis. After the signal is given, the Meiosin protein binds to multiple genes and issues a command to activate the meiotic process.
