From left, Professor Emeritus Richard Holmes, PhD candidate Miranda Zammarelli, and Professor of Biological Sciences Matt Ayres look over maps of songbird territories that Holmes and generations of his students hand-drew every spring from 1969 to 2021 at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. After being shown the maps by Ayres, her adviser, Zammarelli digitized the parchment-thin records while also discovering what they revealed about how songbirds adjust their territories to adapt to population pressure. The insight could explain the ubiquity of songbirds and be used to preserve their numbers by protecting habitat they prefer even if it is low-quality.
