Gametocyte development inside the human host (IMAGE)
Caption
In the blood of its human host, a small number of asexually replicating Plasmodium falciparum parasites differentiate to initiate sexual development, i.e. gametocyte develop. Gametocyte development occurs over five distinct stages and takes approximately 8-12 days, which in the end results in mature, stage 5, male and female gametocytes, ready to be taken up by an Anopheles mosquito.
