Specialists in science communication and outreach will gather on 21 and 22 November for the fifth Japan SciCom Forum Conference (JSF 2023), hosted by the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) in Onna, Okinawa.
JSF 2023 will bring together a diverse group of professionals, including communicators, writers, scientists, and journalists from both Japan and abroad, to engage in discussions on a range of topics aiming to enhance the connections between science and society.
Talks will explore the interactions between research and media from the viewpoints of scientists and press officers, while workshops will offer practical training to support communicators and scientists in Japan as they engage in global outreach efforts.
“We are thrilled to host the Japan SciCom Forum 2023 for the second consecutive year at OIST. Our collaboration with JSF aims to bring together experts from a range of backgrounds to help advance the way we communicate research,” said Heather Young, Vice President of Communication and Public Relations at OIST. “Science communication is vital in promoting public understanding and appreciation of science, and we are committed to advancing this important cause.”
Japan SciCom Forum (JSF) is a platform for individuals involved in science communication and outreach from Japan, with a global focus. Its aim is to establish a professional network and identity, exchange information, and enhance the international and English-language initiatives of Japanese research and higher education institutions.
“We are excited to further expand the conference to boost the English-language science communication in Japan,” said Thilina Heenatigala from the Earth-Life Science Institute (ELSI) and member of the JSF organizing team. Ayumi Koso, from the National Institute of Genetics (NIG) and a JSF organizing team member added, “We are looking forward to have OIST host the event for another year and to bring everyone to Okinawa in-person.”
Registration is free and the event will be in English. Participants from outside Japan are welcome. For program and registration information please see here: JSF 2023
