The Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program (CMU Portugal) has open applications until June 2, 2023 for two Mobility initiatives: Visiting students and Visiting Faculty & Researchers, funded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT). The main objective of these initiatives is to promote a visiting and research period at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh, offering candidates the possibility of strengthening their knowledge and skills as researchers, as well as opening up new career prospects in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).

Within the scope of the Visiting Students Call, 12 scholarships are available for Masters students or Masters who graduated in the last 5 years in Portugal. The research period at CMU will last from 1 to 3 months, supervised by a faculty member from the institution. Applicants must be Portuguese citizens or foreigners with permanent residence in Portugal.

CMU Portugal Program also has 10 scholarships available for teachers and researchers from Portuguese universities who want to spend between 2 weeks and 2 months at CMU to develop their research, education or innovation work in ICT alongside peers at CMU. Applicants must be Portuguese citizens or foreigners with permanent residence in Portugal, holders of a Ph.D. degree at the time of application and affiliated with a Portuguese Higher Education Institution or Research Laboratory.

According to Nuno Nunes, co-director of the CMU Portugal Program “this is a great opportunity for Portuguese students, faculty members and researchers to develop their research at one of the most prestigious United States Universities and work directly with peers in their fields. From ourexperience, these visits are an excellent way to open the door to future collaborations.”

Inês Lynce, also co-director of the CMU Portugal Program, adds that “these mobility initiatives have a real impact on the Portuguese scientific and technological system. Participants introduce changes in teaching methods focusing more on student learning and engagement; new dynamics to improve the organization within their own departments; greater interaction with other research groups in Portugal made possible through the relationships established with other participants, and the start of new collaborative projects with their peers at CMU.”

Since 2007, 81 researchers and 48 students from Portuguese institutions have been part of CMU Portugal Mobility Programs.

The terms of the Call and the online application form is available on the CMU Portugal website.
