NTU first in Singapore and among top 10 most cited research organizations globally by world’s top innovators

The University’s No. 7 placing in the global list, released for the first time by Clarivate, affirms NTU’s strengths in research relevant to industry players.

Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) has placed globally at No. 7 among research organisations most cited by the world's top innovators, underscoring the University’s strengths in industry-relevant research.

The University is the only Singapore organisation in the top 10, which is dominated by organisations from China and North America.

The World’s Top 50 Most Cited Research Organisations ranking was released for the first time by United Kingdom-based global information services provider Clarivate on 16 February.

The ranking is collated based on the number of research papers referenced by the inventions of organisations in Clarivate’s 2023 edition of its Top 100 Global Innovators list, which has been running for over 10 years.

NTU has 1,013 research papers cited by these global innovators. For the top 50 most cited research organisations, the number of papers referenced for each range from between 500 and 2,200.

The top 3 organisations in the inaugural list are the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Stanford University.

NTU research is addressing humanity’s grand challenges such as mitigating our impact on the environment and responding to the impact of technology on people. The University’s No. 7 placing among the world’s most cited research organisations by top innovators is a recognition of our commitment to deepening interdisciplinary research that benefits mankind.”

Gordon Samson, Chief Product Officer at Clarivate, said, “Blending our insights on inventive activity and scientific discovery, we identified the 50 research organisations most often cited by the Top 100 Global Innovators 2023. We congratulate NTU for being listed among the top 50 research organisations. The intellectual capital of all these organisations underpins the design of innovative technologies which will transform our world.”

The top 100 global innovators include companies and institutions whose innovativeness is assessed based on factors such as the influence, success, level of investment and rarity of the organisations’ inventions in the last five years. They must also have over 500 inventions filed since 2000 and more than 100 granted inventions in the last five years.

Major institutions and multinational companies that have made it into the top innovators list this year include the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), Delta Electronics, Rolls-Royce and Thales, which NTU has research tie-ups with.

This latest recognition follows NTU’s 23rd placing in Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers 2022 global list which recognises institutions with the most number of influential scientists noted for their significant and broad influence in their fields of research.

With 41 NTU scientists in Clarivate’s list last year, the University has the largest number of influential scientists among Singapore institutions for the fifth year running.

About half of the listed researchers from the University were cited for their interdisciplinary work.
