Global State of Young Scientists project to launch report on Latin America and Caribbean countries on 1 February

20 January 2023 –The Global Young Academy (GYA) will host the launch event of the newest Global State of Young Scientists (GloSYS) report, “The Global State of Young Scientists in Latin America and the Caribbean: An Exploration of Constraints and Strategies” on 1 February 2023 (16:00-17:30 UTC).

Major findings of the report describe how underfunded research systems and deficient infrastructure in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) countries lead to various consequences for ECRs, for example, a lack of permanent or continuous employment prospects and non-remunerated work. The report also presents strategies for dealing with these problems.

During the webinar, the main findings will be presented by report author Alejandro Miranda-Nieto (Oslo Metropolitan University, Norway), and discussed by Ernesto Fernandez Polcuch (Director, UNESCO Montevideo), Elizabeth Balbachevsky (Department of Political Science, University of São Paulo), as well as Alice Abreau (Professor Emerita, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro). The webinar will be moderated by GYA member Sandra Lopez-Verges (Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies, Panama).

GloSYS is an ongoing empirical research project of the GYA that investigates the context in which early-career researchers (ECRs) work, and the challenges and motivations that shape their career trajectories.

Previous areas of GloSYS focus were ASEAN and Africa, while the third region GloSYS examines is Latin America and the Caribbean. The objective of GloSYS LAC is to investigate the socio-structural contexts that influence the trajectories of ECRs and the capacity of these academics to shape their careers. Currently, the project is seeking cooperation with academic and research institutions across the region.
