Innovator in novel materials adds Fellow of American Society for Composites to a long list of accomplishments

BROOKLYN, New York, Weekday, September 21, 2022 – Nikhil Gupta, Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, was elected the 2022 Fellow of the American Society for Composites (ASC). He received the honor during the annual conference of the society on September 20, 2022 at the ASC’s 37th Annual Technical Conference in Tucson, Arizona. 

The prestigious distinction recognizes outstanding contributions to the composite materials community through research, practice, education, and/or service. The organization lauded him for "...His impactful research on multifunctional heterogeneous syntactic foams, his mentorship of numerous graduate students, his extensive outreach activities in industry and popular media, and his dedicated service to the profession.”

Gupta joined ASC as a graduate student in 2000 and has a long and dedicated service record at the society. He has served as the Membership Secretary of the society (2011-2015) and Chair of the Manufacturing and Processing Division (2006-2012). He was also the co-chair of the 35th Annual Technical Conference of the society in 2020. 

“I want to thank the American Society for Composites to providing so many opportunities for professional development over the years.  All past recipients of the Fellow award are such distinguished members of the composites community that I feel humbled to be included in that list” stated Gupta after receiving the award.

Additionally, in May this year Gupta joined the 2022 Class of Fellows of ASM International, a global organization of more than 20,000 members. The organization recognized Gupta for “Pioneering contributions to the science and technology of lightweight polymer and metal matrix composites,” and exceptional dedication to educating the public about scientific discoveries.”

Gupta, who joined NYU Tandon in 2004 and is affiliated with the Department of Civil and Urban Engineering and Center for Cybersecurity, focuses on advanced materials, with current projects related to developing new security methods for 3D printing, developing filaments of advanced composites and using machine learning methods for materials characterization.

He has presented over 100 keynote and invited lectures and authored 23 book chapters, 200 journal articles, and 90 conference publications and presentations. He has also written or edited 4 books. He is serving on the editorial board of Materials Science and Engineering A, Advanced Composites and Hybrid Materials and ASTM journal Materials Processing and Characterization.
