The CiQUS USC principal investigator, Diego Peña, has been one of the 34 professors from the European Chemistry field invited to the Honour Science & Chemistry event, organised by the European Chemical Industry Council and held yesterday in the emblematic location of the Solvay Conferences, the Hotel Metropole in Brussels.
Besides bringing together 34 established world-leading scientists (including two Nobel Prize laureates), 21 young chemistry PhD students and 25 CEOs of Europe’s leading chemical industries also joined the event. They all discussed how chemistry will continue to change our lives in the near future and the global challenges it faces.
The highlight of the Honour Science & Chemistry event was the recreation of the iconic photo from the 1927 Solvay Conference, considered the most emblematic photo in the history of science for bringing together the greatest scientists of the time.
High-level scientific meeting
The Honour Science & Chemistry event was held yesterday in the framework of the 50th Anniversary of Cefic (Chemistry European Industry Council), bringing together Europe's leading chemists with the younger generation of PhD students, who discussed together about the future of chemistry in a fruitful session. With a busy programme, including a dinner with the CEOs of the European Chemical industry, Prof. Peña was part of this exclusive selection of top-researchers who discussed how to face some of the biggest future challenges, such as sustainability or the fight against climate change.
Reproduction of the most emblematic photo in the history of science
The Honour Science & Chemistry event has been organised by the European Chemical Industry Council, aiming to recover the spirit of the famous Solvay Conferences of the early 20th century, conceived to build bridges between chemical leaders from academia and industry in Europe. This ambitious goal was materialised with the recreation of one of the most iconic photos in the history of science: that of the Solvay Conference of 1927, which brought together some of the most important scientists of the time, among which Marie Curie, Albert Einstein or Erwin Schrödinger stood out.
