Durham, NCEnrique Soto Pérez de Celis, M.D., Ph.D., was awarded The Oncologist’s 4th Annual Young Investigator Award for his research on improving access to supportive and palliative care for cancer patients in low- and middle-income countries. The Oncologist journal established this award to foster advancements in the field of oncology by honoring a young researcher who is principal author of a high-impact article with the greatest potential to improve patient outcomes.

In his winning paper, Dr. Soto and his team found that patient navigation systems, supported by a multidisciplinary team, allow institutions to utilize existing resources in a better and more efficient way when treating patients with advanced cancer. They also found that patient navigation led to an increase in advance care planning and on the completion of advance directives, and that it significantly reduced moderate to severe pain at three-month follow-up.

Dr. Soto’s work has led to the implementation of a patient navigation system at his own institution. He hopes to one day establish a network of trained medical navigators working on behalf of cancer patients across Mexico and worldwide.

Dr. Soto is currently a researcher in medical sciences in the Department of Geriatrics at the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán, a public academic hospital located in southern Mexico City that provides care for uninsured patients. He also leads its multidisciplinary Geriatric Oncology Clinic.

“The editors of the journal are very pleased to honor Dr. Soto for his exemplary work in bringing patient navigation to the problem of improving cancer care in low- and middle-income countries. His work addresses a fundamental gap in connecting patients to health care systems, a problem of overriding importance in this setting,” said Bruce A. Chabner, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The Oncologist.
