Mauritius Parakeet Chicks

image: Captive-bred chicks of Mauritius Parakeet (Psittacula eques), a species restricted to the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius. Habitat loss and introduced species caused this species to decline to about ten birds in the late 1970’s -- early 1980’s. The population has recovered to nearly 200 birds thanks to an intensive program of captive-breeding and release. This image relates to an article that appeared in the August 25, 2006, issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by A.S.L. Rodrigues at University of Cambridge in Cambridge, UK, was titled "Are Global Conservation Efforts Successful?" view more
