A Pap Smear for Ovarian Cancer? (2 of 3)

video: An overview of the PapGene test. Cancerous cells from ovarian or endometrial tumors are shed into the gynecological tract and collect in the cervix. These cells are captured using a Pap smear brush and their DNA is sequenced. The identification of cancer-specific DNA mutations signifies the presence of a gynecologic malignancy. This video relates to a paper that appeared in the Jan. 9, 2013, issue of Science Translational Medicine, published by AAAS. The paper, by I. Kinde at Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center in Baltimore, Md., and colleagues was titled, “Evaluation of DNA from the Papanicolaou Test to Detect Ovarian and Endometrial Cancers.” view more
