Fires North of Mackenzie River in Canada

image: According to the Northwestern Territories Fire website as of Aug. 31, 2014, all fire personnel and equipment have been taken off all fires in the North and South Slave region. Fires that are still burning are being monitored and fire personnel will be out checking fires this week and hopefully declaring a lot of them out. No fires pose any threat at this time. This group of fires has affected the area north of Mackenzie River and to the west of the Great Slave Lake in the Northwestern Territories in Canada. Smoke is drifting southeastward in this satellite image. To date this year there have been 143 fires in the North Slave region and 152 fires in the South Slave region which have burned 3,150,434 hectares (7,784,941 acres). This natural-color satellite image was collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra satellite on September 12, 2014. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS's thermal bands, are outlined in red. view more
