Beginning on 1 January 2010, Springer will publish the Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), a leading international, peer-reviewed, online-only, scientific journal owned by the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA - Trieste, Italy).
The JHEP publishes a wide array of theoretical and experimental physics research, including, among others, collider physics, underground and large array physics, quantum field theory, supersymmetry and astroparticle physics. The journal was created in 1997 and was initially both free to authors to publish and free to readers. At its inception, JHEP was originally supported by SISSA, but then called in support from publishers for distribution and marketing.
The agreement between Springer and SISSA ensures the continued control over scientific and editorial matters by the scientific community and guarantees subscription fees to remain at reasonable levels, while actively examining future open access options.
Daniele Amati, Chairman of the Board of SISSA Medialab, who launched JHEP in 1997, said, "We are confident that working with Springer will allow us to maintain our traditional views and values and we trust that the high energy physics community shares our confidence. Springer's ability to provide stable long term commitments and in particular its innovative approach to open access publishing were considerable factors in making the choice."
Christian Caron, Executive Publishing Editor, Physics, at Springer said, "Springer is very proud to have attracted this outstanding journal. SISSA and Springer will now investigate the conversion of JHEP into an economically sustainable open access publication. This cooperation not only conforms to SISSA's ambition to further develop open access for the high energy physics community, but also fits into our strategy to acquire and develop open access publishing projects in suitable scientific communities."
SISSA, the International School for Advanced Studies of Trieste, carries out original research projects and organizes the post-graduate training of university graduates from throughout the world. In many cases, the training and research projects combine and integrate the expertise of multiple research groups. In this open-minded environment, the graduate students attend courses and conduct research under their advisor's guidance, acquiring the relevant academic background and, more importantly, the capacity to conduct research independently.
Springer (www.springer.com) is a leading global scientific publisher of books and journals, delivering quality content through innovative information products and services. It publishes close to 500 academic and professional society journals. Springer is part of the publishing group Springer Science+Business Media. In the science, technology and medicine (STM) sector, the group publishes around 2,000 journals and more than 6,500 new books a year, as well as the largest STM eBook Collection worldwide. Springer has operations in about 20 countries in Europe, the USA, and Asia, and more than 5,000 employees.
