South Fork Complex Fire in Oregon

image: The South Fork Complex fire in Oregon was started by a lightning strike on July 31, 2014. Almost 36,000 acres have been affected by the fire which is located 20 miles southwest of John Day and 5 miles south of Dayville, Ore. It is projected that the fire will continue to spread on Murderers Creek South in north, northeast, and east directions. Currently the fire is 15 percent contained. This natural-color satellite image was collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua satellite on Aug. 6, 2014. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS's thermal bands, are outlined in red. view more
