Vesicles Identified as Culprit Behind Transplant Rejection

image: Electron micrographs of apoptotic bodies released by serum-starved human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and isolated by sequential ultracentrifugation. The size range of the majority of vesicles is between 1 um and 5 um but smaller vesicles (arrow) between 0,25 um and 1 um, reminiscent of microparticles, are also present. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Dec. 16, 2015, issue of Science Translational Medicine, published by AAAS. The paper, by Melanie Dieudé at Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CRCHUM) in Montréal, Quebec, Canada, and colleagues was titled, "The 20S proteasome core, active within apoptotic exosome-like vesicles, induces autoantibody production and accelerates rejection." view more
