Archaea -- An Overlooked Source of Greenhouse Gas

image: This is a dual fluorescence image of cells from the N2O-producing archaeal enrichment culture CN25. Cells are stained with DAPI (blue, staining all DNA-containing cells) and hybridized with the oligonucleotide probe Cren537-554 (green, hybridizing to the ribosomal RNA of archaea). The archaeal cells are approximately 0.4 - 0.6 um in diameter. This image relates to an article that appeared in the July 28, 2011, issue of Science Express, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Alyson Santoro of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Mass., and colleagues was titled, "Isotopic Signature of N2O Produced by Marine Ammonia-Oxidizing Archaea." view more
