video: In an unprecedented study, the scientists of the international 1KITE project successfully calculated the largest molecular phylogenetic tree for insects. One hundred researchers from 10 countries collaborated to understand the evolution of insects, the most species-rich group of animals worldwide. To reconstruct the phylogenetic tree, the 1Kite researchers deployed modern DNA sequencing techniques, created new algorithms and methods, and used the power of supercomputers. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Nov. 7, 2014 issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by B. Misof at Zoologisches Forschungsmuseum Alexander Koenig (ZFMK) in Bonn, Germany, and colleagues was titled, 'Phylogenomics resolves the timing and pattern of insect evolution.' view more
