The Atomic Structure of Amorphous Silicon

image: High-resolution TEM bright-field images of amorphous silicon suggest that the structure is random. Analysis of diffraction fluctuations show that the material has embedded paracrystallites (red balls) with the cubic-silicon topology. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the Feb. 24, 2012, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Michael Treacy at Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz., and colleagues was titled, "The Local Structure of Amorphous Silicon." view more
