Productivity and Predation Influence Disease in the Wild (5 of 6)

image: This shows a Daphnia dentifera individual infected with the virulent yeast parasite Metschnikowia bicuspidate. The parasite fills the body cavity of the Daphnia, and is especially obvious in her head and near her heart. The blueish-green ovals on her back are developing embryos. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the March 30, 2012, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by M.A. Duffy at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA, and colleagues was titled, "Ecological Context Influences Epidemic Size and Parasite-Driven Evolution." view more
