Banglin Chen, professor of chemistry in the UTSA College of Sciences, has been named among the world's 2014 Highly Cited Researchers by Thomson Reuters. This is the second time Chen has appeared on a Thomson Reuters list. In 2011, he ranked No. 15 on the publication's Top Chemists of the Past Decade list.
Thomson Reuters collaborated with its partner, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the producer of the Academic Ranking of World Universities, to create its Highly Cited Researchers list. The list includes more than 3,000 authors worldwide in 21 science and social science fields. They represent the top one percent of researchers most cited in their specialty areas. Thompson Reuters studied citations from 2002 to 2012.
Chen has authored 124 peer-reviewed papers, which have been cited more than 16,000 times. His work has been published in many top chemistry magazines including Science, Nature Communications, Chemical Communications and the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
Chen joined the UTSA faculty in 2009. His research focuses on solid-state nanoporous metal-organic frameworks and nanoparticles. The materials have applications to gas storage, separations, sensors, catalysis and electronics. He holds eight U.S. patents for intellectual property related to metal-organic frameworks and a license for one metal-organic framework's characteristic gas storage.
A native of China, Chen earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry from Zhejiang University in China and his doctoral degree in chemistry from the National University of Singapore.
Chen is the third UTSA faculty member to be included on a Thomson Reuters' Highly Cited Researcher list. In 2001, George Perry, Alzheimer's Disease expert and dean of the UTSA College of Sciences, and Christopher Ellison, professor of sociology in the UTSA College of Liberal and Fine Arts, were included. Perry has authored 970 publications and been cited more than 54,000 times. Ellison has authored two books, more than 185 publications and has more than 14,000 citations.
