KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Timothy Young, professor in the Center for Renewable Carbon under the Department of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries, has been named a Fellow by the International Academy of Wood Science. IAWS is a global, professional organization that works on all aspects of wood science advancement, technology and research.
IAWS Fellows are nominated based on their global contributions to wood science and research. This award carries international honor and is held in high regard by international forest products programs.
Young notes, "This is very humbling and an amazing honor because this award is granted by my peers across the globe. Being named a Fellow in IAWS brings significant recognition at the international level, and it motivates me to continue to achieve excellence as a professor at the University of Tennessee. I am very grateful and honored to receive this award."
Young was also named Outstanding Alumni of the Year by the University of Wisconsin in 2018 and is currently head of the Industrial Engineering Unit and director of the Center for Data Science of the Athens Institute for Education and Research in Greece. He has given lectures across the globe and was a Fulbright Scholar and Fulbright Specialist in 2014 and 2016 in Austria. In addition to mentoring more than 20 master's and doctoral students in his career, Young also leads global industry courses such as Advanced Analytics and Data Mining; Process Analysis, Statistical Process Control-Lean Methods; and Design of Experiments. Over the course of his career, he has managed grants from the private sector and USDA totaling more than $35 million.
Young is the second faculty member in the UT Department of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries to receive the honor of IAWS Fellow. The title was also awarded to Siqun Wang, a professor of wood science, in 2018.
