Marker 113 Vent Site

image: Marker 113 vent site atop a lava pillar on the edge of the 1998 lava flow. Diffuse venting occurs on the top of this pillar, and beneath it in the collapse area. Tubeworms, and limpets are the dominant species here. Palm worms and scale worms are also present. This image relates to article that appeared in the Dec. 15, 2006, issue, of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Mausmi P. Mehta University of Washington in Seattle, Wash., and colleagues, was titled "Nitrogen Fixation at 92 degrees Celcius by a Hydrothermal Vent Archaeon." view more
