Discovery of Fossil Fagaceae in Patagonia Upends Plant Family Origin Story (2 of 7)

image: Excavations underway at Laguna del Hunco in Patagonian Argentina. The crew is removing tons of overburden rock using drills, picks, and shovels to expose the thin fossil layers underneath. This quarry is where the mature Castanopsis fruiting spike was found. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the June 7, 2019 issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by P. Wilf at Pennsylvania State University in University Park, PA, and colleagues was titled, "Eocene Fagaceae from Patagonia and Gondwanan legacy in Asian rainforests." view more
