Noel Bairey Merz, MD, FACC, will be awarded the inaugural Journal of Women's Health Award for Outstanding Achievement in Women's Health Research, to be presented at the 20th Annual Congress on Women's Health, March 16-18, 2012 in Washington, DC. The Journal of Women's Health Award for Outstanding Achievement in Women's Health Research recognizes exceptional work in the overall advancement of women's health research. Dr. Bairey Merz holds the Women's Guild Chair in Women's Health, and is Director of the Women's Heart Center as well as the Preventive and Rehabilitative Cardiac Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Her research has spanned women and heart disease, mental stress and heart disease, the role of exercise and stress management in reversing disease, and the role of nutrition in heart disease. Currently, she is chair of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-sponsored WISE (Women's Ischemic Syndrome Evaluation) initiative, which is investigating potential methods for more effective diagnosis and evaluation of coronary artery disease in women.
"Dr. Bairey Merz and her investigative team have been examining coronary heart disease and approaches to its diagnosis in women for more than a decade, and she has been a pioneer in understanding female pattern heart disease," says Congress Co-Chair Wendy S. Klein, MD, Senior Deputy Director Emeritus of the VCU Institute for Women's Health and Deputy Editor of Journal of Women's Health.
The 20th Annual Congress on Women's Health is hosted by the VCU Institute for Women's Health and Journal of Women's Health, in collaboration with NIH Office of Research on Women's Health and National Cancer Institute. Other Collaborating Organizations include the American College of Physicians-Virginia Chapter, American Thyroid Association, Arthritis Foundation, International Menopause Society, National Stroke Association, and Society for Women's Health Research. Dr. Klein and Co-Chair Susan G. Kornstein, MD, Executive Director of the VCU Institute for Women's Health and Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Women's Health, will bring together outstanding faculty of the highest caliber for an array of informative sessions focusing on the most clinically relevant topics in women's health including cardiology, oncology, endocrinology, menopause, infectious disease, reproductive health, bone health, psychiatry, and common clinical conditions.
The Congress will offer up to 24.5 credit hours for physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, family physicians, and allied health care professionals. This activity is jointly sponsored by Global Education Group and Institute for Professional Education.
