Recognizing a Face Takes Teamwork

image: What happens in the brain when we view the famous painting of a fruit face by Arcimbaldo? Visual information travels from the eyes to the back of the brain (where the primary visual cortex is located) and from there to the temporal lobe, the large brain region responsible for object recognition. Within the temporal lobe of the macaque monkeys, there are six specialized regions for processing faces. This image relates to an article that appeared in the June 6, 2008, issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Sebastian Moeller and colleagues at University of Bremen in Bremen, Germany, was titled "Patches with Links: A Unified System for Processing Faces in the Macaque Temporal Lobe." view more
