Be Square, Seahorse; It has Mechanical Advantages (10 of 10)

image: The computer-generated image shows two models inspired by the seahorse tail, one that mimics the natural structure (a square prism) and one that mimics a hypothetical structure (a cylinder). Notice that the square geometry provides substantially more surface contact when gripping an object. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the July 3, 2015 issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Jean-Louis Magnard at the Université de Lyon in Saint-Etienne, France, and colleagues was titled, 'Biosynthesis of monoterpene scent compounds in roses.' view more
