NASA Satellite Sees Fires in Northern Canada

image: Numerous fires are burning in Canada's Northwest Territories. Seen in this Terra satellite image taken on June 24, 2014, at 19:35 UTC (3:35 p.m. EDT) red dots or "hot spots" are dispersed across the landscape. Each hot spot is an area where the thermal detectors on the MODIS instrument that flies aboard Terra recognized temperatures higher than background. When accompanied by plumes of smoke, as in this image, such hot spots are indicators of fire.

Several large fires are raging east of Yellowknife and around Great Slave Lake in the southern part of the Northwestern Territories. Other large hotspots are located southwest and south of Great Bear Lake. For updates on Northwestern Territory fires, visit: http://www.nwtfire.com/cms/.
