Applegate Fire in California Closes Parts of I-80

image: The Applegate Fire has closed lanes on the east side of I-80. The fire began on Oct. 8, 2014, and has spread to 420 acres. It is currently 20 percent contained. Over 1,000 houses are threatened by this fire and five homes and numerous outbuildings have already been destroyed. Evacuations in the area are in place. This natural-color satellite image was collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua satellite on Oct. 8, 2014. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS's thermal bands, are outlined in red. The burn scar from the King Fire earlier this year can be seen and is noted on the image. view more
