Nature Bests Humans at Restoring Tropical Forests (6 of 8)

image: A 5-year old restoration planting of native tree species is helping to build biological corridors in the Pontal de Paranapanema region of western São Paulo State to protect endangered species. Active restoration planting is needed to restore forests in most of this area. Fences are needed to prevent cattle from grazing and trampling tree saplings in the restored area. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the 08 Nov. 2017, issue of Science Advances, published by AAAS. The paper, by R. Crouzeilles at International Institute for Sustainability in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and colleagues was titled, "Ecological restoration success is higher for natural regeneration than for active restoration in tropical forests." view more
