Fighting for Control of Tuberculosis (1 of 3)

image: This is a stained histology section from a human tuberculosis granuloma. The granuloma is highly stratified with a caseous center surrounded by a macrophage rich zone contained within a fibrous capsule. The bacteria are most abundant in the macrophage-rich zone. The disease spreads when this structure disintegrates, releasing the bacteria into the lungs to be coughed into the atmosphere. This image relates to an article that appeared in the May 14, 2010, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The Review, by Dr. David Russell of Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and colleagues, is titled, "Tuberculosis: What We Don’t Know Can, and Does, Hurt Us." view more
