Summer Storms Increase Risk of Ozone Loss

image: This is a graphical depiction of the photochemical reactions linking the convective injection of water vapor into the summer lower stratosphere over the United States to the catalytic removal of ozone. Ozone absorbs UV radiation from the sun that damages the structure of DNA. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the July 26, 2012, issue of Science Express, published by AAAS. The paper, by James Anderson at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., and colleagues was titled, “UV Dosage Levels in Summer: Increased Risk of Ozone Loss From Convectively Injected Water Vapor.” view more
